John A. Buehrens was ordained in 1973, served his first congregation in Knoxville, Tennessee, and went on speak as a minister in Texas, New York, Massachusetts, and California. He was elected to become the sixth president of the Unitarian Universalist Association,serving from 1993 to 2001 .
