“Why Unions Matter and How to Support Them,” by Jerry Mead Lucero

I hear it all the time. Statements like… “I guess unions were once good and helped people out, but they’re unnecessary today”, or “unions just protect workers who don’t want to work”, or “those union bosses just want your dues money, that’s all they care about.” I am sure you can come up with at least a dozen more statements like this. I am going to talk about why workers utilizing their collective power has and can accomplish great things. We will discuss how unions shaped our history for the better and why a strengthened labor movement is essential to face the challenges of the present in the future. I hope we will all be able to agree after the talk that unions at their best are one of the greatest tools working people have to build a society rooted in social justice.
